BREAST REDUCTION (MAMMAPLASTY) OVERVIEW
BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY, ALSO CALLED REDUCTION MAMMAPLASTY, IS A COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURE TO REDUCE LARGE BREASTS TO A SMALL SIZE.
Often women who undergo reduction surgery do so because they feel that their breasts are out of proportion with the rest of their body.
The procedure is generally performed for three primary purposes; aesthetic, physical and mental reasons.
Many women in Birmingham look to reduce the size of larger breasts to smaller size so that they are more in proportion to the whole body.
Breast reduction surgery is carried out using one of a number of different techniques depending on the amount of breast tissue to be removed and skin to be readjusted. The technique is similar to that used in breast uplift surgery.

BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE
Many of our patients in and around Birmingham come to us for reduction mammaplasty because they are not only unhappy with the aesthetic appearance of their breasts, but many of them struggle with symptoms caused by their heavy, oversized boobs. These symptoms include; headache, neck / shoulder pain and back discomfort.
Dr Shivram Singh is the specialist breast reduction surgeon at Birmingham Beauty Clinic who has performed many surgeries on women in the West Midlands.
1. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes about two to four hours from start to finish.
2. Typically, an incision is made around the areola, another vertically down to the under surface of the breast, which joins another incision along the natural breast crease.
3. Following the incisions being made, excess breast tissue and skin is removed and reshaped with the nipples moved to a higher and more youthful position.
4. In some cases, the areola is also reduced in size to match the new smaller breasts.
5. You will have one drain in each breast that will be removed before you are discharged home.
6. An overnight stay is usually advised.

WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE?
Breast Reduction Surgery has both cosmetic and functional relevance. To know if you are ideal for this, read ahead:
Need to get the weight off your shoulders or neck which might be causing back pain or discomfort
To improve your posture. Huge breasts sometimes can lead to functional issues for the body and may lead to wrong posturing.
To get Breast reduction surgery for reduced breast size according to body type.
Have huge difficulties in getting right brassiere or clothes to fit
Rashes and skin problems around the breast area and shoulders
Side Effects
Breast reduction surgery comes with a number of side effects, including:
* Bruising and swelling that lasts for a few days.
* Mild pain and discomfort, which is usually not severe and can be controlled with simple painkillers.
* Collection of blood (haematoma) can occur and may require immediate drainage under general anaesthetic.
* Infection
* Occasionally wounds heal poorly or fail to heal. This can depend on your genetic makeup and other factors that affect the healing process such as smoking, obesity and age.
* The wound can break down and will require a skin graft, though this is very rare.
* Part or total loss of nipple and areola, especially in cases of large breast reduction.
* Change in breast and nipple sensation.
* Nipple erection may not be possible after reduction.
* Patients may be unable to breastfeed.
* Scarring, which usually settles and fades in a few months and is hidden under the bra. However, scars can occasionally remain red, lumpy, painful and very sensitive to touch. Lumpy / painful scars are called Keloid scars and there is currently no permanent cure, instead they are treated by softening on a regular basis.
* Smoking tends to have a worse affect on wound healing and smokers can be more at risk of developing Keloid scars. Keloidal tendency is more common in people with dark skin.
Postoperative Advice/Instructions (Recovery)
It is normal for women to have concerns about issues surrounding breast reduction surgery, and at Birmingham Beauty Clinic we aim to put your mind at rest when it comes to pre and post operative care. Not only do we outline the extent of the surgery and what to expect, but we provide all patients with a personalised aftercare plan so that they can care for themselves at home and get the most out of their procedure.
* IMMEDIATE
1. Following surgery, it is normal to have some pain and discomfort, which can be managed with pain relief medication.
2. A support / sports bra is to be worn immediately after your procedure and will help in supporting and reducing swelling.
3. We advise all patients to take it easy when you go home and reserve movements for basic needs.
* AFTER ONE WEEK
1. If you have undissolvable stitches, they will be removed after around 10-14 days.
2. You can shower and begin applying moisturising cream along the scars. you may experience some pain when moving your arms. Gradually increase your activity levels, but refrain from strenuous work.
* AFTER ONE MONTH+
1. Swelling and bruising will begin to settle and sensation around the nipple / breast will continue to improve.
2. After six weeks you can stop wearing your support / sports bra and use a normal non-wired bra for support instead.
* FINAL RESULTS
You will be able to see the final results of your breast reduction between six and nine months. Scars will continue to soften and fade.
